The National Play Festival is an annual event by Playwriting Australia, aiming to inspire playwrights nationally to stretch their craft and practice.

The emphasis of the 2016 festival was the craft of playwriting and dramaturgy, as well as its Melbourne location. The event branding was created with hand-chalked type on the brick walls of The Malthouse Theatre, the venue for the festival. It was a nod to the street art that envelops the laneways of Melbourne, while harking back to the days of writing play times in chalk on the floor.
